Workshops

  • Competency-based Antiracist Education (CARE)

This workshop introduces participants to a transdisciplinary model of competency-based antiracist education. The model focuses on developing competency in recognizing racism, analyzing how it operates, its effects, and strategies for eliminating it, and engaging in antiracist change. This model can be applied to curriculum design and pedagogy in diverse learning contexts from higher education to continuing education to workforce development.

  • Racism Denial

This workshop helps participants to recognize racism denial and respond to it effectively. Racism denial refers to efforts to obscure the reality of racism or minimize its significance. Participants are introduced to the eight types of racism denial, common communication patterns associated with them and ways to counter racism denial.

  • A Better World Requires Better Stories

This workshop helps participants to recognize the ways that narratives shape society and perpetuate injustice and what we can do about it. Participants will learn how to identify master narratives and their impact on perceptions, attitudes, identities, actions and policies. They will also learn to identify concealed stories, what master narratives leave out or make it harder to see. Finally, participants will learn how to identify resistance and change stories and engage in resistance and change themselves through narrative practice.

  • Achieving Health Justice

This workshop helps participants to recognize that health promotion requires justice. Participants will examine health inequities as the outcome of the interaction of classism and racism historically and in the present. This includes structural, cultural, ideological, moral, psychological and historical mechanisms. Participants will also be introduced to an abolitionist approach to promoting the kind of multiracial, economically just democracy required to be truly free and fully healthy.
